Before we can begin working with decimals it is important that you are really confident adding and subtracting whole numbers. This is a very important skill do not rush through or skip work! You can take a few days to complete task 1 if you need to.
Task 1 - Thinking about my skills
Let's find out where you are at. This is not a test so please do not get stressed or worried. What I am asking you to do is to complete some exercises to show you what skills you have and which you need to develop. Everyone will be at a different place with addition and subtraction so I am going to give you work based on what you need to do.
Go to the Basic Addition page on Transum. Work through the levels until you get to a level where you are getting more than two questions wrong. Stop at that level and make a note of where you got to in your workbook.
Go to the Basic Subtraction page on Transum. Work through the levels until you get to a level where you are getting more than two questions wrong. Stop at that level and make a note of where you got to in your workbook.
If you have never used the column method before, where you stack the numbers on top of each other and you are finding this difficult move on to task 2.
If you stopped on or before level 3 move on to task 2.
If you stopped at levels 4, 5 or 6 then move to task 3.
If you made it through level 7 and 8 then move to task 4.
No matter where you start all of you end up completing the same work so please be honest with yourself. Do not start on a higher task than you need to.
Task 2 - Basic Addition and Subtraction
We are going to start from the very beginning and work through slowly. I am sure you will pick up these skills easily enough but it is important that you take your time and are confident before moving on. Working through this unit on Khans Academy may take you a few days or even a week to complete.
Go to Khans Academy, Arithmetic Unit 2 Addition and Subtraction and complete Quiz 2. If you scored less than 10 then go back to the start of the unit, where it says Basic Addition and Subtraction, and work your way through to the end of unit test.
If you scored 10 or 11 then continue working through the unit starting from Intro to Addition with 2-digit Numbers. Work all the way through to the end of unit test.
Now move onto task 4.
Task 3 - Adding and Subtracting Larger Numbers
We are going to start you off working with bigger numbers. Your basic skills are well developed and by the end of this task, you will be just as confident adding and subtracting larger numbers. It may take you a few days to work through the unit on Khans Academy, but that is okay.
Go to Khans Academy, Arithmetic Unit 2 Addition and Subtraction and complete Quiz 5. If you scored less than 7 then go back to Adding 1's, 10's and 100's, and work your way through to the end of unit test.
If you scored 7 or 8 then continue working through the unit starting from Addition with Regrouping Within 1000. Work all the way through to the end of unit test.
Now move on to task 4.
Task 4 - Moving on!
Play Planetary Order Decimals on MathNook.
Watch Adding Decimals by Corbett Maths.
If you can add and subtract whole numbers you can add and subtract decimals. There are two tips that I am going to give you to help make it easier for you:
Use squared paper to help you line up your numbers neatly in columns, trust me you will make a lot fewer mistakes if you line up the columns.
Line up the decimal point and put a decimal in the exact same column in the answer.

Task 6 - Subtracting Decimals

Task 7 - Adding and Subtracting Decimals
Play Digit Drop Decimals on Mathnook. Try playing it for addition and subtraction.

Task 8 - Decimal Problems
Play X-ray Decimals on Mathnook level 1 is addition and 2 subtraction. As the levels move on they include multiplication and division, you do not have to complete these levels yet.
